Director of Public Relations & Film Producer of “John Shearer: American Moments.”
American Moments is a documentary short film honoring the life and legacy of Civil Rights photojournalist John Shearer — directed by James Spione, and produced by Alison Shearer, James Spione, and JP Cutler. American Moments chronicles the extraordinary career of John Shearer, one of the first Black photojournalists to break barriers at Look and Life magazines during the civil rights era.
Through intimate archival photography, rare firsthand testimony by Shearer, and an original film score composed and performed by his daughter, the acclaimed saxophonist Alison Shearer, American Moments brings into focus Shearer’s rightful place in American cultural history. The film lives at the intersection of the Civil Rights Movement, photojournalism, and American identity.
American Moments features Shearer recalling his meteoric rise at the country’s foremost pictorial magazines in the 1960s and 70s, when his images captured the era’s social unrest as well as some of its most influential artists and public figures.
